TCW Comic Arts Certificate Program

What is it?

The TCW Comic Arts Certificate Program provides aspiring comic book artists and enthusiasts with the essentials tools and skills required to effectively and confidently render their own comic book stories, graphic fiction or – quite simply – the process of telling stories with pictures.

What courses are contained within the certificate?

  • Inking for Comics
  • Drawing the Human Figure From Memory
  • Heads and Hands: Expressive Anatomy and Its Uses in Graphic Storytelling
  • Designing Environments and Props for the Comic Book Artist
  • Figure Drawing for the Comic Book Artist
  • one additional course of your choice

Why was it developed?

Since the inception of our school, we’ve been asked repeatedly to recommend the courses necessary to working in the field of comics. As a result, we developed our 4 credit certificate, consisting of 8 1/2 credit courses, offering students exposure to each of the required disciplines in order to be successful as an artist in the field of comics.

How long does it take to complete the certificate?

The courses included in the certificate are offered over the course of one calendar year with our most popular courses repeated throughout the year. While it is possible to complete the certificate in one year, it is not mandatory. We encourage students to complete their certificate at their own pace,  over several years if desired. There is no time limit to completion.

How much does the certificate cost?

Full-time students wishing to complete the certificate program within one calendar year or less, tuition is $2750 + HST. Part-time students wishing to complete the certificate at their own pace can sign up pay for each component on a course by course basis at the applicable price noted on our website.

Is this certificate recognized by the Ontario government?

The TCW Comic Arts Certificate program is not recognized by the Ontario government nor are we affiliated in any way with the Private Career Colleges Act. The TCW believes in giving students an alternative to traditional post secondary education. We pride ourselves on providing courses taught by working professionals with the credentials to back it up.

Will this certificate help me land a job in the comic book and illustration fields?

While the TCW does not have a formal placement program, our Comic Arts Certificate, innovative programs such as our Fit to Print program and the help and support of our faculty combined will provide students with the environment and essential elements required to become a working comics professional.
